 Gateway to the Pelorus and Kenepuru Sounds, Havelock
is a seaside resort 30 minutes' drive from Blenheim and just over one hour from Nelson.
Steeped in both Maori and European history, Havelock's waters were
first crossed by Maori waka (canoes) 1,000 years ago. In the 1770s, explorer Captain James
Cook arrived. Later, Havelock became a thriving gold-mining town, and is now New Zealand's
primary producer of Greenshell mussels. The shellfish are harvested from the numerous
farms in the Sounds' clear waterways, but ample recreational space remains for divers,
kayakers and anglers.
Close to Havelock's boutique art galleries, colonial buildings and
cafés in Main Street, fishing boats, water taxis and charter boats moor at the Havelock
Marina.
The Queen Charlotte Drive between Havelock and Picton is one of New
Zealand's most delightful scenic drives. Winding past the Sounds' numerous bays, this
bush-fringed road takes you from Havelock, at the head of Pelorus Sound, to the seaport
township of Picton. |
